Award-winning picture book website spreads the word in more ways than one

The kids love it. The parents and teachers love it, and now this award. What more can I ask?

Chalk up another victory for the family. Big Universe, one of the brightest online nova stars, has gotten the coveted nod of approval from the Mom's Choice Awards® for its interactive picture book website for children.

Launched less than a year ago, Big Universe Inc. encourages a love for the written word with a huge stock of illustrated storybooks and an online authoring tool. Parents and their children can read books online for free, and adults have the option of following easy-button links to online retailers if they wish to purchase a hard copy of a favorite book.

"I am thrilled to have this venture validated so publicly," said Anil Hemrajani, creator and CEO of Big Universe. "We have thousands of happy website members, but this Mom's Choice seal of approval is an absolutely wonderful way to wrap up our first year."

In addition to its large stock of picture books from well-known publishing houses, Big Universe offers a sophisticated writing tool that helps users author their own custom-made books. So far, members have tapped their imaginations to create more than 5,000 illustrated books.

With easy-to-follow directions, users can write story text and select everything from pictures and animated figures to fancy backgrounds and special fonts to enhance their words. When a book is completed, it is submitted for approval. Once it's been cleared by website staff, the book is made available to share with family members, classmates and other users.

"We tapped the colors of the rainbow to make this site as appealing as possible," said Hemrajani. "Its interactive nature enables book lovers to share their creativity and build a warm community of like-minded users. Teachers and parents can share their lists of favorite books, and librarians have an awesome tool to promote a love for reading. Most importantly, kids can express themselves creatively and have a whole lot of fun doing it."

A user-friendly browser with easily read tabs makes it simple to navigate through the site. Users may select books to read based on topic, author, age level and reader ratings. Members can create their own virtual library, stocking it with books they've made themselves or with favorite stories created by other members.

"I've felt good about this project from its beginnings, but it's rewarding to know others see its merits, too," said Hemrajani. "The kids love it. The parents and teachers love it, and now this award. What more can I ask?"

The Mom's Choice Awards® is an annual competition that recognizes inventors, media and businesses for their efforts in creating uplifting family-friendly products and high-quality services. This year's panel of judges included notables such as Dr. Twila Liggett, founder of Reading Rainbow; Julie Aigner-Clark, creator of Baby Einstein; and LeAnn Thieman, the author of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series.

In addition to the Mom's Choice Awards, Big Universe was the recipient of the 2008 National Parenting Center's Seal of Approval, the iParenting "Outstanding Product of 2008" Media Award, and the 2008 Parent to Parent Adding Wisdom Award.
