For eight years Greg Stallkamp toiled away in the trenches of the financial industry working with clients on ways to create value for their companies and themselves. When the financial industry began to turn sour early in the summer of 2008, Greg saw a downturn in business, and eventually this turmoil spread to the economy in general. While others became worried about what was to come, Greg saw the market instability as the perfect opportunity to finally pursue his dream.
Together with two friends and a team of contracted talent, Greg created Holosfitness.com. The site is a social networking tool focused on the fitness community. The founders intended the site to serve as a forum for athletic, active individuals like themselves to share workouts, find new workouts, and monitor their existing workout routines. In the initial months since launching the company, Greg and his partners have found some level of success. Members have given the site glowing reviews and each day the online community receives more members and content. But for this group of entrepreneurs with lofty dreams and ambitions, moderate growth isn't enough.
So Greg decided to fight for his company, literally. As a promotional effort intended to build awareness for the site and at the same time promote the functionality of Holosfitness.com, Greg has decided to create and participate in the Holosfitness.com sponsored, First Time Fight Club. In this event, two fighters with no boxing training will be vying for the first ever First Time Fight Club Championship.
While there are many risks associated with such a gamble, Greg feels the bet will pay off. He offered, "Unfortunately, being a small company where the majority of our start-up cash was focused on functionality and building a user-friendly site, as opposed to marketing, we have a very small promotional budget. We want to get the word out regarding our site, but we simply don't have a lot of cash to achieve that feat." And thus the idea was born.
Greg continued, "A training routine for an event such as a boxing match, is really the perfect opportunity to display the value that can be achieved through Holosfitness.com. Our site allows individuals to share, follow, comment on, and interact with real life workout information. Rather than passively reading the workout data, members can follow the individual behind the data, ask questions if necessary and hopefully cheer on that athlete. The same is true for the marathon and triathlon training programs we provide. We think of it as a risk-free way for individuals to get to know the specifics of a workout routine. If there is interest in the activity, over time our members can gradually implement parts of the workouts into their own schedules."
The fight is scheduled to take place in early march in New York City. With so much riding on this event, it remains to be seen whether Greg will walk away with a black eye, both figuratively and literally.
