Gardner Pool Plastering (http://www.gardnerpoolplastering.com), the premier resource in Southern California for residential and commercial pool remodeling, reminds the public to find the right experts to properly implement the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGBA). VGBA is not complicated in terms of the law, but it does require expertise in the field.

According to Scott McKenna, CEO of Gardner Pool Plastering, the biggest error he is seeing is the retrofitting of incorrect drain covers relative to other factors. "Simply screwing in a VGBA approved main drain cover is not what the Act mandates nor services the customer. The selection of compliant pool drains cover, for example, requires a careful balancing of the GPM (Gallons Per Minute) to the pool pump equipment. An incorrect cover (i.e. one rated too low GPM for that application), even though on the list of compliant covers, will fail inspection, not to mention potentially harm equipment (by a phenomenon called cavitation) and cause elevated power bills."

McKenna continues, "Other issues involve sump construction under the covers - they must relate to the suction inlet pipe. Even the County Health Departments are admitting that they lack the expertise to mandate which covers may be required in each situation. They must rely on the knowledge of the service provider."

An Emerging Trend:
"I see a trend beginning where half of our time is being spent retrofitting for our customers, while the other half is correcting the work of other providers. This is a disservice to the community, but, unfortunately, unless the customer does his due diligence by selecting a service provider based on experience and expertise, they will have to pay for essentially the same service twice."
