Chromalox, a leading manufacturer of electric heat and control products, has been awarded the ATEX Quality Assurance Notification for its manufacturing facilities located in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. By meeting the European Union's ATEX regulations, the Nuevo Laredo facilities' products with an EC-type examination certificate are approved as safe for use in areas where potentially explosive concentrations of gas, vapor, mist or dust may occur. With this approval the products may now be marketed in European countries.

"Achieving the ATEX certification at our Nuevo Laredo facility is another example of how Chromalox proactively assesses the needs of our customers," said Mark Copeland, Vice President of Operations. "Continually evaluating these opportunities and taking the required actions gives Chromalox a distinct advantage."

The ATEX directive covers a wide range of equipment used in industrial settings ranging from offshore platforms to petrochemical processing plants, mines, food processing facilities and others where a potentially explosive atmosphere may be present. ATEX certification involves testing and validation by a third-party organization. The Chromalox Nuevo Laredo facilities were certified by InterTek, a company based in the United Kingdom.

ATEX certification is partly based on ISO 9001:2000 certification, an internationally recognized quality management system standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The Nuevo Laredo facilities were also recently awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification.

Chromalox manufactures a wide range of heating products at two plants in Nuevo Laredo, including:

  • Tubular Heaters
  • Cartridge Heaters
  • Ceramic Band Heaters
  • Mica Band Heaters
  • Mighty Tuff Heaters
  • Comfort Air Heaters

As part of its quality program, Chromalox has aggressively pursued product certification and has achieved more third-party approvals than any other manufacturer in the industry. The company's Ogden, Utah manufacturing facility was awarded ISO 9001:2000 certification. The company has also been awarded the KOSHA (Korean Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certificate for heating cables and accessories, and the CQST (China National Quality Supervision and Test Center for Explosion Protected Electrical Products) Certification for heating cables suitable for Applications of Division 1 and Division 2 Hazardous Locations.
