Stampede for New Top-Level .TEL Domain Registration

Share Article

Registration for .tel domain started February 3 - 'landrush' of businesses snapping up prime property. Unique domain .tel offers single management and publishing point for both traditional and Internet-based communication platforms.

The new ".tel" top-level domain is more than a simple Internet address. Introducing additional functionality, business and professional users with .tel domain names will have all their contact data stored within the domain name server (DNS) system.

This is revolutionary," says Shawn Moore, Internet marketing expert and president of Vancouver's Think Profits.com.
"No longer will you ask clients for their business card or new acquaintances for a phone number. Instead, you'll ask for their dot.tel."

All .tel domains point directly to a proxy webpage. The domain name owner's contact data is stored within the DNS system - the hierarchical naming scheme for computers participating in the Internet. When a user visits a .tel domain, the owner's contact data is displayed.

"The contact data a business or individual can display can include almost anything, from their mailing address to a mobile phone number to a home or office phone number, to e-mail addresses, Facebook, MySpace and even their Twitter account information," explains Moore. "As well, unlike a fiber-based business card, .tel doesn't get dated: simply log on and change your contact information."

As well, .tel domains can be accessed without opening a browser on many mobile devices through open source applications.

"Presented as a domain, .tel is in fact a remarkably powerful utility that will change how business people communicate and individuals meet and then manage their ongoing communications and relations," says Moore. ".tel is so unique, many of our clients are blown away by the functionality and potential of a .tel domain. However, like the other top level domains, there are a finite number. This means industry-specific businesses, such as roofers, lawyers, accountants and others are missing out on prime territory."

For example, under the .tel system, a book keeper, financial advisor or accountant would register an industry-specific name, such as "taxtime.tel", "incometax.tel" or "taxpreparation.tel". Their potential clients then need only enter the industry-specific domain name ("taxtime.tel", "incometax.tel" or "taxpreparation.tel") and receive the full contact information of the domain owner.

"Think Profits is an accredited and certified domain name registrar," says Moore. "With .tel, we have a really unique, interesting innovation that should make individuals stop and consider the potential of a .tel domain. It is a new method of planting your corporate flag and separating yourself and your company from the competition. If, for example, you are a tow truck driver and you own towtruck.tel., as mobile computing and smart phone use grows in popularity, chances are "towtruck.tel" will be a popular destination for stranded motorists. My advice to business: don't get stranded behind the competition; own your industry-specific .tel and dominate your competition."

"Landrush" is a term used to define the stampede of registrations when a registry opens to registrations. As with past top-level domains, sales are conducted first come, first serve. Early adopters, pursuing the prime addresses or "land" usually adopt aggressive behavior, pursuing shorter strings, dictionary terms, trademark names and industry names.
