Tri Tax Offers Free Tax Preparation for International Longshore and Warehouse Union "Casuals"

Fat cats across the country are receiving bail-outs, but some of the hardest working Americans aren't feeling any relief yet. This tax season, Tri Tax Franchise is providing its own economic break to International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) members classified as "Casual" by offering them free tax preparation.

There's barely enough work for full-status ILWU union members, which means little to no work for Casuals

Tri Tax founder Carlos Marquez credits ILWU members with helping him launch his business 15 years ago and wants to repay those workers by doing what he can for them today. "When I first opened my office doors, my very first client was a longshoreman," he explains. "The next day, he brought two fellow union members, and by the end of that week, I had prepared tax returns for over 25 ILWU union members."

Any active ILWU Casual will receive tax preparation at absolutely no cost to them when they visit the Wilmington, Calif., office at 1251 North Avalon Boulevard and file their tax return by Saturday, February 28. This new office is conveniently located near the ILWU Credit Union.

Casuals--which are ILWU members who receive work only after full-status ILWU members--are being hit particularly hard by the current economic crisis. "There's barely enough work for full-status ILWU union members, which means little to no work for Casuals," Marquez says. "From what I understand, some Casuals have seen their income shrink by more than 50% compared to the previous year. We're hoping the free tax preparation not only helps them financially, but also lets them know that our community is behind them."

Tri Tax now has more than 75 locations throughout Southern California, but Marquez says the port towns of San Pedro and Wilmington will always be special because that's where he got his start. "ILWU members were there for me when I needed them, and I'm committed to helping them get through this tough time."
