Robert J. Ryan, Jr., CIC, son of an admired and well-known regional insurance entrepreneur, announced the opening of Ryan & Ryan Insurance Brokers, Inc. The new agency, at 400 Stockade Drive, opens almost exactly 50 years after his father, Robert J. Ryan, CPCU, CIC, CLU, began what grew to become one of the largest businesses of its kind in the mid-Hudson Valley.

The firm offers auto, homeowners, life and health insurance for individuals and a full array of coverage for small business and locally owned corporations, including retirement plans. The service team includes Lisa Golden, Jeanne Beck and Marc Reuben, former colleagues who have rejoined Ryan, as well as James Blundell.

Under the Ryan & Ryan brand, the family name returns as the major sponsor of the "flat, fast and first class" Shamrock Run, one of Kingston's most popular events. The new firm will also rekindle the "old fashioned but sorely needed" personal relationship business model that had become the hallmark of the family firm, Ryan stated.

Ryan re-enters the business from 22 years with Robert J. Ryan, Inc., known as Ryan Insurance, of which he was an owner from 1988 until the business was sold in 2000. He served as president of the agency through 2007.

"Too often, the insurance business has become simply a process relationship with the consumer, whether served through a local office or through an 800 phone number. I want to change that. The DNA of this business is client service. As a broker, we are the gateway between the individual who has the risk and the insurance companies that provide the coverage," Ryan said.

"Being a gateway means having deep knowledge of insurance and coaching our clients - and we consider them clients, not customers - to secure the optimal coverage against economic loss," said Ryan. "It means revisiting and reassessing risk at intervals. It means being accessible all year long, not just at renewal time. That's what we mean when we say the hallmark of Ryan & Ryan is customer service," Ryan added.

"I'm back in the business I love, and we're doing it the old fashioned way, person-to-person," Ryan said. State-of-the-art information technology supports the portfolio of products from established, "carefully chosen" insurance companies. For example, Ryan & Ryan Insurance Brokers, Inc. is the only corporate agency in the Kingston area associated with the financially conservative, but highly responsive, Erie Insurance Group for home, auto and personal liability coverage, as well as commercial coverage. The firm has a portfolio of seven insurers, each selected for its specialty and responsiveness with claims.

Away from the office, Ryan, one of the founders of the Shamrock Run in 1988, has completed nine marathons, five of them in New York City, and served on numerous local boards, commissions and professional organizations including president of the Kingston Boys and Girls Club from 2000 through 2002 and chairman of the Ulster County Development Corporation in 2007. He and his wife, Amy Lee Ryan, and their four children live in Hurley, N.Y.
