Making the Best of the Worst Economy: International Bath & Tile Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Despite the economic downturn and news from large competitor Home Depot of store closings, San Diego based International Bath & Tile sees opportunity to not just survive, but thrive.

There's a lot of talk right now about the tough economy but IBT continues to thrive

International Bath & Tile began in 1979 when the country was in the midst of another economic downturn. Today, IBT remains positive in the face of this current economic storm by announcing that it has launched a yearlong celebration to mark its 30th anniversary of continued success in business.

Family-owned and operated, International Bath & Tile has grown their business into the area's premier destination bath and tile showroom. "There's a lot of talk right now about the tough economy but IBT continues to thrive," said Clive Moch, owner of International Bath & Tile.

In fact, despite the economic downturn, IBT continues to set records, noting that 2008 was a record sales year. "It takes time and effort to build a solid reputation," Moch said. "and in these turbulent times, we feel very fortunate to have earned the loyalty and trust of San Diegans."

With big businesses struggling, smaller companies like IBT see opportunity to grow. The recent announcement from Home Depot to close their specialty Expo Design Center stores as a result of the crumbling housing market and focus on their core business is a growing trend.

Home Depot said its Expo high-end design business wasn't strong even during the housing boom and weakened significantly as demand declined in the current economic environment. The company said. "The Expo upscale home remodeling business has not performed well financially and is not expected to any time soon. Even during the recent housing boom, it was not a strong business."

Moch disagrees saying "IBT has always offered luxury and hard-to-find items, as well as popular name brand products, combined with exceptional service and extensive product knowledge. We have built long-term relationships with manufacturers around the world and offer many exclusive products. Our expertise in the decorative plumbing market spans 30 years and it can't be done by just anyone. We believe our longevity shows that experience matters."

"We strive to be indispensable to our customers by offering quality selection and unsurpassed expertise" says Tammy Moch, VP of Sales and Marketing, "We serve a broad spectrum of customers, which requires very specialized service, an ability to supply any product requested and work within any budget. Many of our customers are industry professionals like Architects, Designers and Builders that demand a higher level of product knowledge. While the typical homeowner needs more personalized assistance."

"We see this current economic environment as an opportunity to strengthen our customer relationships and ultimately increase our business. Being an owner-operated company allows us to adapt to market changes more rapidly than larger companies, whose bureaucracy cannot react as quickly and end up in trouble. Ultimately, this will benefit consumers because companies will be forced to improve both consumer value and supplier relationships or simply go out of business."

More than ever small businesses must be innovative and focus on their core strengths to survive and be well positioned when the economy turns around.
