College Station, Texas (PRWEB) February 23, 2009
The Texas A&M University Aggie Corps of Cadets is offering incoming students the chance to win one of five $500 gift certificates to a College Station bookstore through its Web site, http://www.aggiecall.org.
The average Texas A&M freshman spends between $400 and $700 on books each semester. The bookstore gift certificate giveaway is just one of many efforts made by the Corps to help students succeed academically at Texas A&M.
"Academic excellence is a top priority for members of the Corps of Cadets," said Col. Jon Hall, Assistant Commandant for Recruiting. "We look forward to welcoming the class of 2013, and hope these gift certificates will help make the costs of books and school supplies more affordable. We welcome any student entering the Corps for their first semester to enter the contest."
In addition to the bookstore gift certificates, the Corps of Cadets awards a variety of scholarships throughout the year. The Corps of Cadets offers over 1,600 scholarships, ranging in value from $1,000 to $20,000. Scholarships are both need-based and merit-based, and the majority are provided to students entering the Corps as freshman cadets.
Additionally, many cadets benefit from the fact that the units they join are partially determined by their major, creating an environment where upperclassmen are available to serve as mentors to younger cadets.
Winners will be selected on or around August 31, 2009. To be eligible to win, students must be accepted to Texas A&M and enroll in the Corps of Cadets. If a high school junior is selected as the winner, the prize will be held until the student is admitted to Texas A&M and joins the Corps of Cadets the following year. Students who do not join the Corps will forfeit the gift certificate.
