Clarity Group, Inc., a leading provider of healthcare risk, quality and patient safety software and consulting services, announced today that Ellen Flynn, RN, MBA, JD, Executive Director of its operating division, Clarity PSO, was a key presenter in an education program on February 19, 2009, cosponsored by KattenMuchinRosenman LLP, Chicago, IL and the Illinois Association of Medical Staff Services. The Program, Patient Safety Organizations: A Practical Guide to Understanding and Implementing a PSO Program and Managing Confidentiality and Privilege Protections, was broadcast as a web-based seminar to more than 2000 people across the country and on-site at the KMR offices.

Patient Safety Organizations were created by the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (Patient Safety Act). Healthcare providers who collect information for purposes of enhancing patient safety and for reporting to a PSO, and that follow certain conditions set forth in the Act, are afforded protection under the Act from discovery in the case of potential litigation. "I was very pleased to participate with an excellent group of presenters today to provide important information to healthcare providers on how they can best access the protections under the Patient Safety Act and also to help them understand the services available to them in working with a PSO. Working with a PSO presents a new and exciting vehicle for learning from healthcare events and making true, sustainable, and evidenced-based changes to enhance patient safety and healthcare quality as a result of bringing issues to light without the fear of discovery in a litigation situation and without risk of losing protection of data confidentiality," stated Ms. Flynn. "We appreciated the insight of KMR in sponsoring this program and the opportunity to be a part of its development. The number of people who responded to this webinar is indicative of the interest in the PSO process," continued Ms. Flynn.
