Over 400 members and guests of the Los Angeles Japanese-American Bar Association gathered at the Center at Cathedral Plaza in Los Angeles on Friday evening to install the new JABA President, Katherine M. Hikida, and her Board of Directors, and to hear the keynote speech by the Honorable Alice Marie H. Stotler, United States District Court for the Central District of California, Former Chief United States District Judge. In addition, the evening was highlighted by a special tribute to the late Congressman Robert T. Matsui. ABC Channel 7 News Anchor David Ono served as the Master of Ceremonies.

Seated at Mr. Teraoka's table were distinguished guests which included Congresswoman Lucille Roybal Allard (34th District), Ms. Young O. Kim, Director, Asian Community Relations for Congressman Edward R. Royce (14th District), the Honorable Paul Turner, Presiding Justice, California Court of Appeal (2nd Appellate District), the Honorable Thomson Ong, Judge, Los Angeles County Superior Court (Long Beach Branch), and prominent Los Angeles attorney, Eric Nishizawa. A video presentation of Congressman Matsui's life and esteemed career as a leading Sansei legislator was featured. During his 26 years of distinguished service in Congress, he served on powerful committees, including the Judiciary Committee, and became the third highest ranking member of the influential House, Ways and Means Committee. He was highly regarded on Capitol Hill as an exceedingly intelligent, skillful legislator and became known as one of the preeminent experts on complicated issues, including Social Security, international trade, tax, healthcare and welfare reform. Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award for her late husband. Mr. Teraoka chatted with Congresswoman Matsui, and they reminisced old family ties back to the Central California area where their respective families reside. Mr. Teraoka expressed his appreciation for Congresswoman Matsui's continued good work in the United States Congress.
