This year's festival is unprecedented
Vienna, VA (PRWEB) March 1, 2009
The Kennedy Center's (http://www.kennedy-center.org) International Committee on the Arts (KCICA) welcomed guests from around the world on February 23 to celebrate the launch of Arabesque: Arts of the Arab World, a three-week long festival showcasing the rich artistic and cultural diversity of Arab artists and art forms. Presented in cooperation with the League of Arab States, the festival features artists of international renown as well as indigenous performers making their US debut. KCICA co-chairs and major contributors Mr. A. Huda Farouki, CEO of Nour USA, Ltd. (http://www.nourusa.com) and Mrs. Samia Farouki, President of HII-Finance Corporation (http://www.hiifinance.com) were commended for their extraordinary commitment to Arab programming at the Kennedy Center during the evening's opening celebration.
The festival's opening program featured selections from "Oman…O Man!" a world premiere Kennedy Center commission produced by the Debbie Allen Dance Company, readings from influential Egyptian novelist Ahdaf Soueif, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Marcel Khalife's Al-Mayadine Quartet and the Children of the Al-Farah Choir.
"The planning and logistics involved in bringing together all 22 Arab nations were remarkable," said Mr. Farouki. "There are over 800 Arab artists here in Washington for this festival, some of whom have never been to the US. Their common culture unites them and it's never before been on display on such a grand scale."
Representing both the United States and Jordan through KCICA, Mr. and Mrs. Farouki contributed their unique insight in showcasing the talents of artists from all 22 Arab League Nations. The festival includes all of the performing arts - music, theatre and dance as well as visual and literary arts and film, which the Kennedy Center has featured through the transformation of its galleries, foyers and exhibition spaces. Each Saturday of the festival also features A Taste of the Arab World, a journey through the various Arab regions through the cuisines of each country.
"This year's festival is unprecedented," said Mr. Farouki. "We're thrilled to work with the Kennedy Center to present the beauty of Arab traditions and aesthetics in a whole new light."
