Acumen Fund today announced the release of "The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World," a deeply personal and inspiring memoir by Acumen Fund CEO Jacqueline Novogratz.

"I wrote 'The Blue Sweater' to inspire more people to become engaged in working to solve the problems of global poverty," said Jacqueline Novogratz, author of "The Blue Sweater" and CEO of Acumen Fund. "The private, public, and nonprofit sectors must all work together. Markets play a role in the solution, as do public policy and philanthropy."

Eleven years after young Jacqueline donated a prized sweater from her uncle to a Goodwill in Virginia, she came across a young boy in Rwanda wearing the very same pullover, with her name still on the tag. To Jacqueline, this remarkable experience is a true metaphor for the increasingly interconnected world in which we live.

In ways both hilarious and heartbreaking, "The Blue Sweater" relates how Jacqueline left international banking in the 1980s for an adventure in Africa that became the starting point for a career as a philanthropist with a mission to solve the problems of global poverty. Along the way she founded and directed The Philanthropy Workshop and The Next Generation Leadership program at the Rockefeller Foundation, and Duterimbere, the first microfinance institution for women in Rwanda. In 2001, Jacqueline founded Acumen Fund, a nonprofit venture fund that invests in market-oriented approaches to delivering critical, affordable goods and services to the world's poor.

More than just an autobiography or a how-to guide to tackling poverty, "The Blue Sweater" challenges readers to grant dignity to the poor and to rethink their engagement with the world. Jacqueline's story is a testament to the indomitable quality of the human spirit and the power of hope and optimism to end poverty. Published by Rodale Books, "The Blue Sweater" will be featured by Barnes & Noble from May through July as part of the Discover Great New Writers program.
