Marotta Controls is proud to announce it has been awarded a follow on contract for continued production of the pneumatic firing valve for the Small Diameter Bomb. The multi-million dollar contract is for Lot 5 production. Deliveries will begin in August 2009 and will continue throughout the year.

The Small Diameter Bomb, the Air Force's low-cost direct-attack precision strike weapon, is designed to reduce collateral damage through its precision and accuracy. Its small size and weight allows more weapons to be carried on each aircraft, increasing the number of possible targets on each sortie. It is particularly useful in urban areas, and has been deployed during combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan for close air support missions.

Compatible with every US fighter bomber and aircraft, the Small Diameter Bomb is among the most successful, cost effective weapons programs for the US Air Force, bringing effective weapons capabilities to current and future warfighters.

Because of its small size and weight, the Small Diameter Bomb can be ejected from its smart weapons station using Marotta's high-pressure pneumatic firing valve rather than conventional pyrotechnic methods. High-pressure pneumatic systems are cleaner and safer than pyrotechnics, require less maintenance, and can be recharged instead of thrown away, thus reducing costs while contributing to a more sustainable capability.

"As the Small Diameter Bomb continues to prove its effectiveness in areas of conflict, demand for this low-cost precision strike weapon continues to be strong with our joint operations and allies," said Michael Leahan, Vice President and Chief Sales Officer of Marotta. "We are proud to contribute to this very successful program, and stand ready to keep pace with demand."

This follow on contract was awarded by Carleton Technologies, part of the Cobham Life Support Division, Orchard Park, New York. To date Marotta has supplied thousands of pneumatic firing valves in support of the Small Diameter Bomb program.
