Central Book Services (CBS: Australia's book wholesaler) and On Demand (Australia's biggest digital printer) today launched Central On Demand, integrating world class POD technologies into the supply chain for books in Australia.

Central On Demand is a response to the changing world and how collaboration between two industry leaders can deliver the best solutions.

CBS Executive Chairman Richard Siegersma said "The publishing industry has the largest product catalogue of any consumer category and we are building a supply chain around that. Since 2007, when we launched our unique consolidation services to handle book trade orders for all publishers, the Australian industry has benefitted from a local wholesale infrastructure, the accepted norm in the UK and the US.

"For a few years we have collaborated with On Demand, Australia's biggest digital printer, to leverage their POD digital capacity into the local wholesale supply chain. Several of the world's largest publishers are already using the Central On Demand service to print books to order, one at a time, completely eliminating shipping costs, reducing administration costs, delivering faster and importantly, reduce carbon output. We were discovering that surcharges of 20% on top of the air freight itself have made the current supply chain model unsustainable."

"This initiative complements perfectly the Espresso Book Machine rollout. In 2008 we installed the first Espresso Book Machine to Australia and plan to grow the local EBM network significantly." added Siegersma.

The economic environment demands the industry untangle itself from the traditional way of doing things. Central On Demand allows UK and US publishers to improve margins and improve customer satisfaction avoiding slow and costly processes involved in exporting to Australia. Typically it takes 3 weeks to deliver an overseas title to an Australian customer. Central on Demand can deliver within 3 days.

Bruce Peddlesden, CEO of On Demand said "We aim to continue to be the best digital printer in Australia and this drives us to providing the very best solutions when it comes to digital print related services. On Demand possesses the largest infrastructure of digital print devices of any single company in Australia. We have been producing books for over 10 years so leveraging our expertise into the Central On Demand service is a logical development.

Our secure systems give publishers and our other customers peace of mind, knowing their content is secure and well protected. It will be easy for publishers to start using Central On Demand as a simple service agreement and existing print ready PDF's are all that is required.
