In these circumstances, people want to make what they own work
New York, NY (PRWEB) March 9, 2009
Americans are 82% more likely to fix a household product than they were a year ago according to a recent survey by Partstore.com.
"People are looking to save money any way they can, and they're realizing there are lots of fixes they can do themselves," said Dan Seligson, VP of E-commerce for PartStore.com. "Our business is up 65% over last year, and the internet is fueling our growth."
Many DIY sites are also seeing growth from the DIY trend. JustAnswer.com, an expert answers site, has seen growth of 75% over the past 3 months on DIY repair questions for appliances and electronics. And OwnerIQ, which operates a user manual network, reports web traffic up 50% since the fall of 2008.
"We have customers telling us they've saved $1500 by repairing a computer or refrigerator themselves instead of replacing it," Dan said. "Using the online resources available that provide information and how-to guidance for repairs, consumers are finding the confidence and knowledge they need to do it themselves. They are saving money, while also getting a sense of accomplishment from fixing things."
Of 2900 respondents to PartStore's survey about consumers' tendency to repair products, 79% had repaired household products in the past year. Of those consumers 54% of them have fixed major appliances while the next most fixed products were computers with 36%.
