Cancer patients in East Kent are now being diagnosed twice as quickly, thanks to a digital dictation solution provided by SRC (http://www.src.co.uk) and implemented at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust.
Where Pathologists once had to write the often complex results of their tests by hand for a secretary to input into a computer system, SRC's voice recognition solution now allows them to dictate into the system in real time while they are actually performing the tests, which means GPs and Consultants receive life-saving results much more quickly.
Histology reporting turnaround times have been cut from a week to often the same day.
The technology was delivered in phases, starting with the core digital dictation solution using wireless headsets and waterproof foot pedals. Once staff had familiarised themselves with the new way of working, SRC delivered the integrated speech recognition element of the solution, which enables spoken words to appear on the screen in real-time within the system.
Since completing the deployment, the Trust's Cellular Pathology Department has reported an accuracy rate for all speech recognition work in excess of 99% across a variety of accents, including Hungarian, German, Asian, Australian, English and Greek. This impressive accuracy rate was enabled by the provision of specialist Pathology vocabularies, training and follow-up sessions by SRC.
Paul Williams, Head BMS Cellular Pathology at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, is delighted with the result. "We evaluated different systems and chose to implement SRC's Winscribe Digital dictation and Dragon Voice Recognition solution," he said. "It has been invaluable in helping us to improve reporting turnaround times and eradicate typing backlogs in spite of increasing workloads. Another unexpected benefit has been the freeing up of secretarial staff to train in laboratory duties."
As well as providing user training, SRC delivered hardware, project management and implementation consultancy, which included integrating the solution into the Trust's 'iSoft Apex' Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). SRC are also providing ongoing support for the system and users.
Chris Hart, CEO at SRC said: "We are delighted that the work we have completed at East Kent Hospitals has helped deliver real and immediate impacts on performance levels, efficiencies as well as significant time and cost savings. We look forward to continuing our work with East Kent Hospitals and further improving their document creation processes."
SRC has delivered solutions to numerous Pathology departments within the NHS, including major teaching hospitals such as Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. SRC has delivered many projects within the South East region including a Trust wide roll out of digital dictation at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust. The WinScribe digital dictation system is now used by more than 45 Trusts throughout the UK.
