The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC, http://www.aapc.com) is excited to announce that Andrea Malcolm, a medical coder from North Lauderdale, Fla., is its 75,000th member. As the nation's largest medical coding training and certification association, the AAPC's membership has quadrupled since 2000.

AAPC plans to recognize Andrea with a special "75,000th Member" shirt and a credit to take a certification exam free of charge. Andrea has nearly seven years of experience in the billing and coding industry, and currently works in the billing/coding department of Boca Raton Community Hospital in Boca Raton, Fla., where she handles billing, coding and collections. Prior to joining the staff at Boca Raton Community Hospital, she worked for a billing and coding entity, providing services to both physician offices and hospitals. Andrea plans to take AAPC's CPC® certification exam in May. Andrea said that she is excited to take part in her local chapter activities and take advantage of AAPC's continuing education opportunities. Additionally, she said that membership and certification with AAPC will help her grow professionally.

"Our membership has experienced major growth in the last several years," said Reed E. Pew, AAPC president and CEO. "With reductions in payments to physicians that often increase their workloads, the need for highly skilled and proven coders that have specialized knowledge has never been greater. That demand has contributed to our rapid membership growth and reaching this 75,000-member milestone. We recently announced our '100K by 2010' drive to certify more physician-based coders."

Members of the AAPC enjoy a variety of benefits, ranging from medical coding training and education to networking and employment resources. The AAPC expects continued growth over the next several years in the physician office and outpatient arenas.
