Palm Harbor-based Octopus, Inc., announced today the launch of PreferNo.com, an easy-to-navigate web site for buyers of unique, hard-to-find or vintage automobiles, boats, airplanes and real estate. By developing a site for buyers versus sellers, this online marketplace takes a unique approach that allows buyers to seek specialized, high-value items by posting very specific criteria.

"As a collector of vintage cars and other collectibles, I've spent hours and hours online looking for very specific items through some traditional selling-focused web sites. This can be frustrating and results are often limited," says Michael Boyd, founder and president of Octopus. "We are reversing the logic of a traditional marketplace like eBay by allowing buyers to list what they want in exact detail and have sellers of those items approach them directly if they have a matching item. In particular, the site is arranged with autos, boats, airplanes and real estate categories."

PreferNo.com cuts out the middleman. By registering and posting items on PreferNo.com, buyers and sellers can connect directly and avoid costly commissions. Boyd says these dealer commissions can run anywhere from 2% to 10% for auto, boat, plane and real estate commissions. When dealing in high-end luxury items, this commission can easily run into thousands of dollars. "I certainly prefer no commissions and so will site visitors, who I expect to be like-minded individuals who really know what they are looking for," Boyd says.

Features of PreferNo.com include a segment for buyers to precisely post what type of auto, boat, airplane or real estate property they seek.

  •     Auto details include specifications such as manufacturer, price range, model, year, mileage, fuel type and even preferred geographic location for where the car must come from.
  •     Boat details include specifications such as manufacturer, price range, year, LOA, preferred location, engine specifications and dimensional details like beam and draft.
  •     Airplane details include type, price range, year, model, capacity, exterior color, wingspan, weight, height, performance items such as climb rate, speed and range, and more. Location may be specified also.
  •     Real estate details include type of property, from land to condominium to single-family dwelling, property features such as number of beds, baths, square footage, year built, and more.

PreferNo.com allows sellers of autos, boats, airplanes and real estate to view what items potential buyers seek. They view these posts through an easily navigated "seller" section of the site. From the seller's perspective, PreferNo.com allows them to reach out to qualified buyers, which can greatly expedite a transaction, Boyd says.

"PreferNo.com is for enthusiasts. People who don't just like cars, boats and airplanes, but love them. They want to know every detail and nuance, and constantly work on these 'toys' to get the most out of their performance, make it look its best, restore it to its original state or like to spend time customizing the item," Boyd says. "In many ways, visitors to our site are the kind of people whose personality is closely linked with these luxury items."

Already, items have been posted to PreferNo.com that fit the profile Boyd sought when creating this site, including one buyer seeking an Abbot-Detroit 924. This buyer is willing to pay between $80,000 and $100,000 for this American luxury automobile manufactured between 1909 and 1919.
