Parents, Children Preserve School Memories Together

Enumclaw, WA (PRWEB) March 13, 2009 -- After the baby book is filled out and completed, then what? Educator and grandmother Delane Pennington has the answer--school-year memory books. She developed "Now I Am in ... Kindergarten" (WinePress Publishing, 2008), to meet the need.

"Children love to see their own work displayed," Pennington says. "It gives them such a sense of accomplishment. This book gives parents and children a chance to partner together to share and record experiences and memories."

The book includes pages for the child's writing and math samples, drawings, photographs of special friends and events, and lists of favorites, firsts, and important milestones, such as first book read and first field trip.

Pennington hopes the book will be the first of a series of grade-level school memory books.

"Memory books keep memories alive," she says. "And they are shared for years to come, creating a valuable intergenerational link. Learning to record memories instills a lifelong pattern of keeping the past alive."

Pennington lives with her husband in Washoe Valley, Nevada, where they own and operate an organic apple orchard. The orchard and gift shop are open to the public each year during apple season.

"We love meeting new people and watching families come to pick organic apples," Pennington says. "They are teaching their children the importance of healthy living, farming, and creating family memories that last."

Besides painting, Pennington makes a hobby of listening to people's stories. "I've never met a person I didn't like. Everybody has a story to tell and memories that make up that story. Since I believe that memories keep the color in life, I love listening to the memories people have to share."

An elementary-level teacher for eighteen years, Pennington now serves as director of special services and ESL coordinator at Silver State High School in Carson City, Nevada. She is a member of the Nevada Special Education Advisory Committee, representing Nevada Charter Schools.

Pennington's love of children and teaching extends outside the classroom. She also teaches Sunday school, works in the church nursery, and volunteers as an adult literacy tutor.
