Language Learning Enriched by Instant Messaging System Designed for Education

Wimba® Inc., the education technology company that helps people teach people, and Pearson, the global leader in education publishing and education technology, announced today that the Pearson suite of MyLanguageLab™ products will now include Wimba Pronto™, the only instant messaging system designed for education. Both companies offer solutions designed to enrich the learning experience, enhance learning, improve outcomes and increase student retention.

The MyLanguageLab suite, comprised of MySpanishLab™, MyFrenchLab™, and MyItalianLab™, is an online learning and assessment system developed in close collaboration with language instructors to serve the unique needs of both language learners and teachers. Its unparalleled combination of tools, which already includes Wimba Voice™, now includes the robust collaborative features of the Wimba Pronto instant messaging system, making it one of the most innovative language-learning solutions available today.

With the inclusion of Wimba Pronto, features like blended audio and video conferencing, synchronous chat, and application sharing will now enable over 100,000 students to form pairs or small groups and complete collaborative homework assignments from within MyLangaugeLabs. Faculty will also be able to hold office hours and assign tutors, harnessing the power of real-time learning scenarios outside of the physical classroom.

"We are thrilled to include the capabilities of Wimba Pronto in this most recent evolution of the MyLanguageLab suite," stated Bob Hemmer, Executive Editor and Program Manager of MyLanguageLabs. "Its collaborative features alone make this exciting, but in combination with some of the 'back end' features like role authentication and seamless CMS integration, we offer a powerful solution which the language learning community can enthusiastically embrace."

Pearson's suite of MyLanguageLab products have included Wimba's asynchronous technology, Wimba Voice - a web-based voice solution that facilitates vocal instruction, coaching and assessment - since 2007.

"The audio recording capabilities of Wimba Voice have had a significant impact on the rapid growth in usage of the MyLanguageLab series," said Phil Miller, Publisher of Pearson's World Languages division. "Integrating Wimba Pronto's synchronous, live communication is the logical next step, allowing us to take the series to the next level by offering a valuable new tool to language instructors and their students."

"Both Wimba and Pearson have a singular focus on enriching the learning and teaching environment with innovative technology," said Tommaso Trionfi, CEO of Wimba. "This focus, our many joint customers, and the combined capabilities of Wimba Pronto and MyLanguageLabs make this a natural partnership - one we know will benefit language learners for years to come."
