Food, transportation, exercise, and tips on how to look and act local and not be surprised by transgender celebrity while in Austin for the SXSW Festival; understanding a city that is known as 35 square miles of real estate surrounded by reality.

First, for the women: no makeup. Unless you want to look like you're from Dallas or Houston, keep it simple. For the guys, if you wear cologne you will be immediately dubbed a tool. Older folks walking the width of the trail are perfectly acceptable because we all want to be able to do that when we're their age. No dirty looks or sweaty side-swipes.

The CEO of one of Austin's most successful young start up technology companies, S3, is offering up his insights into the city and how visitors to the South by Southwest festival can make the most of their time in the coming days. Often referred to as "35 square miles of real estate surrounded by reality," Austin has both less and more than many American municipalities. As Holt writes on his blog http://s3ceojackholt.wordpress.com/ it's not all that easy to get from points A to B without getting distracted.

"Cabbing it? Austin has more snowplows than cabs. You are much better off getting a ride from someone at your hotel or the bar you end up in-we are excruciatingly, annoyingly friendly people here and would consider it an insult if you didn't ask. If you're not "on the twitter" as John McCain would say, you should be so that you can broadcast your need for a ride or directions or Leslie (perennial transgender mayoral candidate) sighting using the #sxsw hashtag."

If you're planning on running off your hangover, the city's crown jewel, Town Lake Trail or Lake Lady Bird or Lady Bird Johnson Park should not be far from your hotel. Holt's advice on how to look and act like a local on the trail?

While his culinary expertise is dubious, his attempts at wit are unrelenting but Holt suggests concentrating on Tex-Mex and barbecue while dining here in the center of the known universe. Go here if you want to not look like an out of town tool in Texas: http://s3ceojackholt.wordpress.com/
