Meta, a supplier of comprehensive medication safety information systems for the healthcare industry, announced today that it will demonstrate its complete suite of medication safety information systems at the upcoming HIMSS09 Conference in Chicago. A Meta client, Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC), located in Portsmouth, Ohio, recently achieved 98.53 percent barcode compliance, enterprise-wide, with its pediatric department experiencing almost 100 percent compliance.
Recent studies have shown that having full barcode compliance - scanning both the patient's ID barcode and the medication barcode at time of administration - results in less than one-tenth of one percent of patients experiencing a medication error that leads to serious consequences.
Meta's systems strongly support patient medication safety initiatives by means of a comprehensive set of powerful, yet flexible, clinical modules, including full database integration with Meta's eMAR, a Web-based point-of-care medication administration system that helps eliminate errors via "five rights" checking through the use of bar code technology. According to a recent study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), although the standard is for nurses to check the "five rights" of medication use -- right patient, right medication, right dose, right route, right time -- only 34 percent of dispensing and two percent of administration errors are caught prior to reaching the patient.
"We are able to follow the 'five rights' of medication administration and can say that we truly are following the safest way to deliver meds to a patient," explained Valerie DeCamp, Director of Nursing Inpatient Services and Accreditation at SOMC. "The software has the appearance of our old paper model, which makes it easier for the nurses to learn and follow their daily workflow."
According to Rory Phillips, R.Ph., Director of Pharmacy Services for SOMC, "With MetaCare eMAR, our staff has access to barcode technology at the point-of-care and detailed information about the patient's medication order, from clinical alerts and interactions that may have been encountered by the pharmacist at order entry to notes and alerts entered by other practitioners. The solution provides us with a dynamic and flexible documentation tool that updates the patient's medication profile instantaneously when a change is made by either our pharmacy or nursing departments. Our barcode compliance and the achievement of secure, paperless nursing administration and pharmacy records within the guidelines of the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy demonstrate how well MetaCare eMAR has improved the safety and confidentiality of our patients."
