Hollywood, CA -- The Independent Investigations Group (IIG) will be instructing California Nurses in the use of "Chinese shéyou" (literally, "snake-oil"), anthropomancy (telling the future by reading human entrails), and "canupiary" (a made-up word). In spite of this absurd curriculum, the class has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nurses (CBRN) - the state agency that licenses nurses and certifies nurse educators.
Originally the IIG lobbied the Nursing Board to stop giving credit for the teaching of "Therapeutic Touch" - a discredited technique rooted in supernatural explanations. When the Board rejected the proposal to teach exclusively evidence-based medicine, the IIG decided to investigate the decision making process further by submitting their own magic-based nursing course for certification. The course won the Board's approval.
IIG Chair and CFI-Los Angeles Executive Director Jim Underdown put this into perspective, "This may seem like an extreme move to make, but don't forget, this is just the logical continuation of what's already happening." Indeed, prior to the IIG's action, the Nursing Board approved "Therapeutic Touch," techniques developed by "psychics," teaching about "the 11 dimensions of the Universe," and the use of magnets. Underdown continued, "nurses have to take continuing education courses in order to keep their licenses, and they have to pay for them with their own money. They shouldn't be getting ripped off."
The IIG's nurse education office -- the California Foundation for Institutional Care (CFI-Care) -- is now CEP provider #11516, and they plan to actually teach a responsible course on critical thinking in medicine.
The course is promised to be both educational and hilarious. Nurses will get in for free, and they will receive class credit that counts towards maintaining their license. The press is also invited. "It'll be a hell of a show," claims Underdown.
