New Street Signs May One Day Indicate American Land Claimed by the Chinese Government to Repay Loans

Artist R. Lloyd Ming says his 'Chinese claimed area' street signs are a commentary on the possibility that President Obama will use American land to guarantee debts to China.

The official looking street signs read: 'In lieu of money owed, the Chinese Government has claimed this area.' They are created by cutting edge New York-based artist R. Lloyd Ming. Most economic news reports have confirmed that Japan and China have lent trillions of dollars to America through the purchase of American Government Bonds. This money has been used to pay for everything from lowering taxes and financing America's wars to fighting terrorism, among other uses. Most economists agree that one day America will have to repay the loans.

"Although the wording in the signs is exaggerated for dramatic effect; the rationale could one day become reality," says Ming. "I created this series to encourage dialogue regarding the issue of America borrowing money from China and other countries." Ming explains that his signs make us consider a situation in which America cannot pay back money to countries we have borrowed from. The signs suggest that public American land may have to be used as payment for the loans.

With prices for Ming's works usually $4,000 to $70,000; the aluminum and vinyl art signs are a relative steal at $1,000 each in a limited edition of 12. "With this economy, many art collectors are having trouble buying art," says Ming. "So I added a couple of less expensive limited edition works like these signs to give collectors an opportunity to buy something significant yet affordable."

R. Lloyd Ming's current solo art show is called 'I Am Not Chinese.' The focus of the exhibit is China and what Ming calls the tenuous relationship between China and America. His artwork addresses many controversial Chinese issues including censorship and capitalism under communist rule, trade imbalance, human rights, pollution, Tibet-China conflict, America borrowing money from China, potential US-China war and the deliberate devaluation of the Chinese Yuan. The show runs from March 3, 2009 to April 3, 2009 at Studio C. - 55 West 74th Street - New York NY, 10023. The show is by appointment; Telephone: (212)362.3093

Ominous Sign of The Times

If America cannot pay back loans to China; signs like this may one day start appearing in American cities, says Artist R. Lloyd Ming.
