It reduces any distortion that would normally come from glass in the same thickness or from laminating multiple thinner acrylic sheets together to get the right thickness. This means that visitors to the Dubai Mall are seeing reality when they're looking through the windows or walking through the tunnel, which adds to the impressive nature of the entire aquarium.
Dubai, UAE (PRWEB) March 27, 2009
Reynolds Polymer Technology (RPT) knows how to build aquarium windows at an unrivaled level, as evidenced with their large contribution to the new Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo within the newly-opened Dubai Mall.
RPT supplied 14 acrylic windows, the largest of which measured nearly 21 feet wide (6.3m), 18 feet high (5.5m) and more than 15 inches thick (386mm). Part of RPT's involvement also included the design and manufacture of a 158 foot long (48m) acrylic tunnel that spans the length of the aquarium. The tunnel rests 36 feet (11m) beneath the water's surface and allows for 270 degree views of the sharks, rays, and divers that swim through the tank.
"Our ability to cast windows to the required thickness is a huge advantage," said Roger R. Reynolds III, CEO of RPT. "It reduces any distortion that would normally come from glass in the same thickness or from laminating multiple thinner acrylic sheets together to get the right thickness. This means that visitors to the Dubai Mall are seeing reality when they're looking through the windows or walking through the tunnel, which adds to the impressive nature of the entire aquarium."
The aquarium is home to 33,000 marine animals from 85 different species and features one of the world's single largest schools of Sand Tiger sharks.
Mr. Suresh Bhatia, Chief Executive Officer, Emaar Retail said, "Since the opening Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo at The Dubai Mall, we have had thousands of visitors experience the walk-through tunnel. The 270-degree acrylic tunnel, 48 metres long and 11 metres under the surface, makes for incredible close-encounter experiences with some of the most fascinating underwater animals on the planet. Visitors are treated to an exceptional underwater experience as they see eye-to-eye without distortion, with sharks, rays and thousands of other fish."
The entire aquarium measures 167 feet long, 66 feet wide, and 36 feet high (51m x 20m x 11m) and holds 2.6 million gallons (10 million liters) of water. It was developed in line with the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) code of ethics and animal welfare policy.
