New Semantic Bridge Built to the Asian Pacific

The Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS) Berhard CEO, Dato' Abdul Wahad Abdullah, and the Semantic Technology Institute (STI) International President, Prof. Dr. John Domingue, signed a collaborative agreement further improving the ties between the two organizations.

The agreement relates to cooperative R&D and dissemination activities in the area of semantic technologies. Initial plans within the agreement foresee the adoption and implementation of the STI International education and training program in Asia Pacific region, the evaluation of this year's industry-focused Asian Semantic Technology Conference and the establishment of the first Malaysian Semantic Web school.

The cooperation between the two organizations began almost a year ago when MIMOS Berhard joined the STI International community as a full member. MIMOS Berhard is a research and development organization of the Malaysian Ministry for Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) which specializes in the areas of Information & Communication Technology and Microelectronics. It's membership of STI International - a global network of scientific, industrial, civil, and political organizations with a vested interest in the further development and exploitation of semantic technologies - and the supplementary collaborative agreement allow both partners to expand upon their wealth of knowledge and expertise, as well as increase their target dissemination regions.

The success of networked information and communication technologies - such as semantic technologies - are often dependent upon globally accepted, mature standards and specifications. In turn these standards and specifications are only as good as the breadth of their contributions. Collaboration efforts such as the agreement between MIMOS Berhard and STI International are essential in formalizing international contributions and take us a step further along the path towards the full realization of semantic technologies.
