Locally-owned AAA Lawn Care is the first fertilization and weed control company in the state of Michigan to achieve the coveted Michigan Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Certification. The certification means the company employs a variety of best practices to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and train staff in pollution prevention practices.

In Michigan, about 65 of the state's 860 golf courses have achieved this certification. But AAA Lawn Care's participation has expanded the program's impact to include thousands of residential and commercial customers, initiating increased domestic awareness of environmental practices in home and business lawn care.

"Our industry needs to lead the way in protecting the watershed from runoff through the proper application of fertilization and weed control products. Studies show that homeowners who do not use professional application services tend to over-treat by about 50%," said AAA co-owner Mike Waldecker.

"We wanted to raise awareness of the importance of precise treatment as well as give our clients the assurance that our programs are environmentally astute."

The nationally recognized program was developed at Michigan State University to advance environmental stewardship and increase compliance of Michigan's turfgrass industry.

AAA Lawn Care has implemented other environmentally sustainable practices such as the use of environmental lighting, container recycling, computer routing and GPS mapping to reduce fuel use. The company, which has been in business for 25 years, reviews its programs frequently to stay on the leading edge of environmental practices. Partner Mike Stehouwer calls it 'standard operating procedure.'

"We like to keep it green in every possible sense," Stehouwer said.

Partners in the program are the Michigan Groundwater Stewardship Program, Michigan Turfgrass Foundation, Department of Environmental Quality, Golf Association of Michigan, Michigan State University and the Michigan Department of Agriculture.
