We are doing our part to help U.S. teachers and students continue to raise the academic bar
Upper Saddle River, NJ (PRWEB) March 26, 2009
Advanced Placement Summer Institutes- workshops for new or aspiring high school teachers - will be sponsored throughout the U.S. and abroad this summer by The College Board. Pearson, the market leader in AP* program offerings, will provide complimentary AP* texts and teacher support materials in conjunction with these workshops to help increase the number of qualified AP teachers.
As part of the new administration's education agenda, President Obama and Vice President Biden have prioritized initiatives that help prepare students for college and the workforce. Among these is the "Make College a Reality" initiative, which has a goal of increasing by 50 percent the number of U.S. students participating in AP or college-level classes by 2016.
U.S. students' AP exam performance has continued to show improvement, but African American, Latino and Native American students remain underrepresented in AP classrooms: Hispanic or Latino students represent 14.8 of the AP examinee population, African American students represent 7.8 percent, and Native American students just 0.6 percent.
"We are doing our part to help U.S. teachers and students continue to raise the academic bar," said Rick Culp, Executive Vice President, Sales, Pearson Curriculum. "We've donated thousands of books to help inform and train teachers, and will continue to do so in the name of increasing opportunities for all students, especially for those historically underserved."
Among the AP* materials being offered this summer are: Campbell, Biology 8e AP Edition; Roberts, Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing 4e AP Edition; Edwards, Government in America 4e AP Edition; Finney, Demana, Waits, Kennedy Calculus: Graphing, Numerical, Algebraic, 3e, Media Update. Each of these texts is supported by AP* Test Prep Workbooks and/or AP* specific ancillaries.
