BOTOX® Cosmetic Delaying Baltimore Face Lift

A plastic surgeon in Baltimore says face lift candidates are increasingly delaying more extensive surgical facial cosmetic surgery in favor of noninvasive "injectable" face lift procedures, which offer a smaller-scale, much faster alternative to traditional facial plastic surgery.

With tight schedules and tighter budgets these days, an increasingly popular facial procedure can provide a cost-effective way to reverse signs of aging in under an hour. Acclaimed Baltimore cosmetic surgeon Dr. Dean Kane (http://www.drdeankane.com) and popular skin care and cosmetic specialist Lauri Kane say that the injectable or "Liquid Face Lift" is quickly gaining ground as a low-cost alternative to more extensive approaches.

"Liquid face lifts are so popular right now partly because of the smaller price tag," Lauri Kane explains. "Especially in today's economy, many people feel that they need a bit of a 'lift' in their looks and their lives, but they want a flexible way to address just a few characteristics easily, quickly and cost-effectively. Liquid face lift does that."

For Baltimore women, a "liquid" face lift typically involves a combination of injectable treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic as well as a selection of dermal fillers to target wrinkles and other typical signs of aging in key areas such as the eyes and brows, and to restore a fuller, more youthful shape to the lips and cheeks. Only cosmetic surgery can correct sagginess in deep facial muscles, but Dr. Dean Kane finds that for women who do not feel ready for a surgical face lift, Baltimore injectable treatments are often enough to provide dramatic improvement.

"BOTOX is the starting point for many women because it can treat several problems at once," he explains. "A few Baltimore BOTOX injections can often help improve the look of the whole face by smoothing out 'frown' lines between the eyes and above the eyebrows. In the process, it can give the eyes a brighter, more alert look by restoring a beautiful arch to the brow, and at the same time tighten loose tissues above the eyes."

The second component of the liquid facelift, injectable dermal fillers, helps restore volume to tissues that typically thin and sag over time, in areas like the lower eyelids and the folds between the nose and the corners of the mouth. Although occasionally a Baltimore plastic or cosmetic surgeon will focus on one filler as a one-size-fits-all solution, Dr. Kane says that after 22 years of practicing cosmetic surgery, he is a firm believer in offering a full menu of dermal fillers that he can adapt to the individual patient. Typically, his practice will perform a detailed skin assessment before explaining the different options and recommending one based on the patient's skin type and aging patterns.

"These treatments are highly versatile, which is one reason they can be so effective to rejuvenate the features so dramatically," he comments. "At the same time, though, there are so many treatment areas and filler options, it becomes very important to be able to choose the right one confidently. For crow's feet and the marionette lines that create 'jowls,' for example, I might suggest a JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel treatment, and for lip augmentation we will typically use Prevelle™, an injectable filler that contains lidocaine to prevent discomfort."

Based on the patient's treatment areas and skin quality, as well as the layout of her deeper facial tissues, Dr. Kane may recommend Restylane®, JUVÉDERM, Radiesse®, Evolence®, or Prevelle. Results may last from six months to a year, depending on the type of filler, and in some cases Dr. Kane or Lauri Kane may also recommend a skin-level treatment such as a chemical peel or Emerge®, the practice's private-label RetinA treatment system, to correct "sun" spots, finer wrinkles, or other factors associated with sun-damaged skin. Occasionally, a patient may choose to balance the injectable "lift" with another treatment such as Latisse® lash thickener or the Liquid Smile signature teeth whitening system.

"Each patient has different factors at play that require a slightly different approach," Dr. Kane explains. "At my practice, even with small-scale treatments like the injectable Baltimore face lift, we take the time to work with the patient to make sure we are developing the right treatment plan for them, uniquely. We often host free presentations, and we make sure we understand the patient's goals very clearly. Our goal is to identify the top-priority characteristics they want to fix, and correct them simply and elegantly."
