Scarborough, ME (PRWEB) March 30, 2009
Representatives of Northeast Technical Institute (NTI) provided sixty $500 scholarships to the Workforce Scholarship Fund (http://www.coastalcounties.com), increasing their overall annual donation from $10,000 to $30,000.
Due to the recent downturn in the economy, the $20,000 increase in scholarship donations couldn't have come at a better time. The scholarships will be used to help low income students pay for training at NTI for a variety of programs including Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, CDL A (Truck Driving), HVAC/R Technician, computer programs, and more.
The Coastal Counties Workforce, Inc. (CCWI) created the Workforce Scholarship Fund (WSF) program to provide education scholarships to low-income workers in coastal Maine. The scholarships give recipients the opportunity to upgrade their skills to increase their wages, advance within their current profession, transition to new employment or move from part-time to full-time employment. The Workforce Scholarship Fund also helps to increase the income of residents in coastal Maine by improving their access to education and training opportunities.
Although CCWI receives funding from the federal government to assist very low-income Mainers find work or go to school, there is little or no funding available to those individuals who are making more than minimum wage but less than a livable wage and who cannot afford to pay the cost of tuition on their own. The Workforce Scholarship Fund supports those Mainers who are not eligible for federal funding and who are earning more than the minimum wage but less than a "living wage" -- currently defined by CCWI as $14/hour. CCWI can not depend on state and federal funding to effectively increase the income of our neighbors who although employed, do not have enough left over at the end of the month to pay for the luxury of education.
NTI is a leader in short-term career training and has been engaged in preparing men and women throughout New England with new and marketable skills, allowing them easy access to exciting careers. Over the past three decades, the owners of NTI have established partnerships with hundreds of organizations within the business community. These organizations rely on NTI for well-trained, professional employees.
Most programs offered at Northeast Technical Institute can be completed in just a few short weeks or months. Students can earn their national certification for any Medical program offered at NTI. Computer students may elect to take their Microsoft certifications upon the completion of their training. NTI is also the state's only authorized testing center by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), so HVAC/R graduates can test at the Scarborough campus.
