The award winning camp voted "Best Cure for the Summertime Blues" by San Francisco Magazine, will offer sessions devoted to visual, literary and performing arts. Mentored by a faculty of distinguished artists, children ages 9-14 will exhibit their artwork, share their writings and take the stage at the culmination of each session. Among new offerings this year are performance cabaret and visual arts classes that focus on earth friendly materials. The camp will continue to offer its signature sessions in Musical Theater, Fashion Design, Painting and Drawing, Cartooning and Creative Writing. SFArtsED is San Francisco's premier arts provider, active in the city's arts community for over forty years.
Participation in the SFArtsED Summer Camp has traditionally been an entry point for children wishing to join the SFArtsED Players children's musical theater company. The camp is also attended by youth who are interested in attending the School of the Arts in visual and performing arts. While offering a challenging and stimulating environment for young artists, the sessions are also fun for kids at any level of experience or expertise.
In addition to the camp for middle school children, SFArtsED also offers a camp devoted to arts exploration for children ages 6-9 at the same location.
About The SFArtsED Players
The SFArtsED Players is a musical theater company that reflects San Francisco in all its diversity. Hailing from neighborhoods from all over San Francisco, the SFArtsED Players is made up of 40 young people ages 9-15 from SFArtsED's performing arts residencies and SFArtsED Summer Camp. The performers are selected for their talent, enthusiasm and commitment. They work with the directors of the company 12 hours each week, training as "triple threats" (actor/singer/dancers) and rehearsing for their performances. The company is in residence at The Eureka Theatre and presents both original musicals and classics of the Broadway canon. Each year the Players perform free matinees for the San Francisco Unified School District.
Founded in 1965 (as the Alvarado Arts Workshop) by renowned artist Ruth Asawa, SFArtsED has transformed the lives of children, their families, teachers, artists and volunteers. Programs include SFArtsED Summer camp, In-School Artists-In-Residence, After-School programs, The SFArtsED Players Musical Theater Company, apprentice programs for college and high school students, and One-to-See public arts exhibits.
