Planetary Emissions Management, Inc., an innovative startup company in carbon emissions monitoring and management, acquires an exclusive license for a groundbreaking laser analyzer to directly track fossil fuel emissions in the atmosphere. The analyzer tracks a rare form of carbon known as carbon 14 (14C) directly identifying fossil fuel emissions. Fossil fuel emissions are a key component of the Kyoto Protocol and associated carbon trading but are not measured directly in most cases.
The founder and chairman of PEM, Bruno D.V. Marino, PhD, and former director of research at Biosphere 2 with Columbia University says, "A field ready analyzer for 14C is nothing less than revolutionary because it makes fossil fuel emissions visible against a background of natural CO2 allowing refined tracking and accounting of the gas."
The analyzer is a timely development given an urgency to understand regional carbon budgets.
"It is increasingly clear that the use of estimates for fossil fuel emissions will hinder efforts to track reductions in fossil fuels crucial to meeting targets such as those set by the State of California under the AB32 legislation," says Marino. Beta units are scheduled for sale in Q4 09.
The laser based approach, developed by Professor Daniel Murnick of the Rutgers University, NJ, Dept. of Physics, is revolutionary in that traditionally large accelerators and beta counters are typically required for a 14C analysis.
The system invented by Murnick, long needed to make 14C measurements accessible, is
compact and easily operated. It is "a result of fundamental physics applied to 14C and has
numerous applications," says Murnick.
PEM Inc. is employing the 14C analyzer in proprietary monitoring platforms and reporting systems, offering turn key data and subscription services for GHG related applications including monitoring of sequestered CO2, forest monitoring and tracking industrial emissions.
