Today, Beacon Consulting Group, a strategic and operational consulting firm to the investment management industry, released its Financial Reporting Benchmark Study. The study analyzes the resources applied to the preparation and review of mutual fund shareholder reports. The results underscore the benefits to asset managers of implementing financial reporting best practices and highlights timing and resource differences between firms that prepare their own financial statements versus those that outsource the process.

"Beacon's Benchmark Study validates what we have been advising clients to do in order to improve their financial reporting process, especially the benefits of pre-cycle work. The study's results will help drive continuous improvement efforts in this critical function," said Frank Strauss, Principal, Beacon Consulting Group.

For firms that prepare financial reports inhouse, the study's findings validate the need for maximizing technology. There was also a strong correlation between firms spending more time on planning the reporting cycle and finishing sooner.

For firms that outsource, the findings clearly demonstrate that proper oversight and coordination with third party fund administrators is critical to achieving operational efficiency and the desired cost benefits. An environment of cooperation and communication supported with meaningful SLAs that contain well-defined and measurable metrics is a great start. These SLAs provide the basis for performance measurement and identification of enhancement opportunities from a service and operations perspective.
