Bodmin Businesses Call For Prioritisation of Road Improvement Scheme

Although originally scheduled to be replaced by dual carriageway in 2008, the scheme to widen the A30 around Bodmin was suddenly dropped and a new projected date of 2019 suggested. Now with the scheme back onto the agenda a date still has to be fixed for work to start and money allocated from the regional funding budget. Now businesses in the area are calling for the scheme to be prioritised.

Traffic flows freely until you reach a 2½mile stretch of the A30 from Temple to Higher Carblake that runs across Bodmin Moor. This is the last stretch of single carriageway across the moor, and a well-known bottleneck.

The tenacity of local people brought the scheme back onto the agenda and finally back onto the priority list for road improvement, however a date still has to be fixed for work to start and money allocated from the regional funding budget.

Now businesses in the area, already feeling the effects of the recession, are calling for the scheme to be prioritised before visitors stream into the county this summer.

Charles Edward-Collins, Managing Director, Cornish Traditional Cottages comments, "Unsurprisingly this stretch of road causes huge tail backs in both directions at busy times of the year, which causes considerable aggravation to holidaymakers and Cornish businesses alike and also results in major congestion along the local lanes as people try to bypass the problem. Effectively this cuts Cornwall off from the rest of the UK, which helps nobody."

"A lot of the preliminary work has already been done, the scheme has been fully designed and costed and meets all they key regional criteria of connectivity, deliverability and economic viability. It could be implemented quicker than most other schemes under consideration, however it remains to be seen if the will is there to ensure Cornwall finally gets this problem solved before the inconvenience of delay hits business even harder."
