Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) April 1, 2009
It's no secret that Patton Boggs partner DeMaurice Smith was elected to run the NFL Players Association.
What is not so well known is Smith's game plan for the association. Mr. Smith will appear from noon to 1 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, April 2nd on the Capital Thinking Radio Show. The show is featured on the VoiceAmerica Radio Network, the nation's leading internet-based radio network.
Mr. Smith succeeds the legendary Gene Upshaw in his new role as the executive director of the players association. He was elected on March 15th in the first ballot by 32 team representatives over two former union presidents, Troy Vincent and Trace Armstrong, and sports attorney David Cornwell.
Smith, 45, will soon face the challenge of collective bargaining talks with the sport's franchise owners.
Smith is the chair of the government investigations and white collar practice at Patton Boggs where he represents Fortune 500 clients in both criminal and civil matters as well as before congressional committees. He served as an Assistant U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia from 1991 to 2000 where he first-chaired more than 80 trials. He also served as counsel to then-Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. at the Justice Department.
Prior to the appointment to run the NFL Players Association, it was widely expected that Smith would become the next U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
Patton Boggs is sad to see such a talented star as DeMaurice Smith leave the firm--even if it is every football fan's dream job, said Thomas Hale Boggs Jr., the firm's chairman.
"De has the extraordinarily rare combination of exceptional courtroom skills mixed with exceptional people skills," Mr. Boggs said. "He possesses numerous litigation strengths--razor sharp intellect, persuasive charm and forceful arguments. Yet all of those traits are, perhaps, surpassed by his strengths outside the courtroom. De Smith has a real empathy for other people whether they are family members of a homicide victim, a foundation helping kids climb out of poverty or a colleague who needs a little advice. Put simply, De Smith always does the right thing. The NFL players are lucky to have him."
