Seattle, WA (PRWEB) April 1, 2009 -- Celebrating 20 years working with the medium of resin, Andie deRoux "UNFOLDING" opens at Friesen Gallery Seattle on Thursday, 2 April, 2009. Featuring approximately 20 mixed media works, this Northwest Artist blurs the lines between painting and photography while adding applications of resin to create mysterious surfaces that emphasize patterns found in nature.
The Seattle-born painter spent the last year and a half living in Boston and traveling in Italy. Each location provided a different source of inspiration. Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum became a sanctuary for deRoux while living on the East Coast and is the source for much of the floral imagery. The work focused upon architecture is derived from buildings the artist encountered while traveling in Rome and Sienna.
While the imagery comes from two different origins and is composed of unique patterns and themes, deRoux sees a common thread. Whether it is the pattern created by a blossoming magnolia or the repetitive architectural lines that echo those found in nature, deRoux feels that all of the work is linked to the Art Nouveau movement through its dependence upon and recognition of the natural world.
These two sources hold a special meaning for deRoux. When the artist encountered these patterns while traveling deRoux was immediately drawn to them and realized they were reminiscent of places previously visited in dreams. Creating art becomes a means for the artist to revisit elements of the subconscious to sift through the experiences encountered in dreams to achieve a better understanding.
DeRoux states that the work often "represents a certain type of freedom from the innocence experienced as a child. It is also something to be feared- a metaphor for life as we move through it."
Andie deRoux's process alone is something to behold. The artist has developed numerous techniques of working with resin. For example, in ROME (45" x 31.5") the artist works resin over a transfer of a photograph. Painting above and between the layers of resin with sumi ink, deRoux lays bold brushstrokes across the surface, emphasizing the patterns within the architecture. The artist combines this with subtle washes of blues that add depth and create a mysterious, atmospheric effect. While based upon a particular photograph taken within the Rome airport, the final result is both abstract and surreal.
Andie deRoux received a BFA from Washington State University. DeRoux's work can be found in the public collections of Safeco, Seattle University, Seattle Chinese Medical Center, CRS Financial Center, the Pike Place Market Foundation and private collections throughout the world.
