32-Member Team Prepares for Upcoming Cycling Season With a Visit to the OA/UNE Human Performance Lab

The OA Centers for Orthopaedics and CycleMania of Portland today announced their sponsorship of the newly created OA Performance Center / CycleMania Masters Cycling Team. The team was introduced to a local audience attending the Grand Opening Celebration of the new OA Sports Center in Saco on Saturday, March 21. Sanctioned by USA Cycling - the national governing body for bicycle racing in the United States - the Maine-based cycling team will compete in a series of masters-level road races, criteriums and stage races throughout the Northeast during the 2009 cycling season.

"OA is proud to sponsor this unique, new cycling team," John, Wipfler, CEO of OA Centers for Orthopaedics, which owns and operates the OA Performance Center in Saco. "This group of masters-aged men, representing several different cycling clubs throughout the region, has come together to race under the OA Performance Center / CycleMania banner. We could not be more pleased with this sponsorship, which serves to increase awareness of our newly opened Performance Center in Saco."

During the grand opening celebration, members of the 32-person team roster participated in a series of metabolic and physiological tests to benchmark their early season fitness. Trained medical specialists of the OA Sports Lab - a collaborative venture between the University of New England and OA - conducted lactate threshold, V02Max and Wingate Power tests in the state-of-the-art biomechanical and physiology lab that also serves as a real-world laboratory for students of the University of New England's Applied Exercise Science and Athletic Training programs.

"It was pretty cool to be able to run these kinds of tests on the athletes," said Dave Brink of
CycleMania, co-sponsor of the team.

"We knew some of these guys were really strong," echoed his longtime business partner, Eddie Quinn. "Now we have benchmark data we can monitor throughout the year as they enter a series of races beginning with Marblehead on April 5th."
