Berlin (PRWEB) April 4, 2009
An insurance company with around 170,000 employees in 55 countries worldwide has purchased 10,000 WinRAR licenses for their base in Germany. Until recently, the company was using WinZIP which was no longer able to accommodate the new requirements both from a technical as well as a financial standpoint.
The cause was an internal request for a software package that was capable of crunching vast amounts of data of more than 10 GB and delivering high compression rates. The quality of the zip program had to coincide with a good price-performance ratio.
WinRAR was convincing in a direct comparison to the competition: high compression rates, optimum handling of vast amounts of data and multi-format support.
Following an extensive comparison analysis of different tools - including WinZIP - WinRAR gave a convincing performance with the best compression rates. The results confirm that the RAR format is the right choice for safe compression and storage of large quantities of data. In most cases, it provides a much better compression rate than ZIP, in particular through powerful archiving which views the numerous small, similar files as a single data stream and archives it as such. Fewer redundancies mean a higher compression rate.
Thanks to its compatibility with a number of formats, the archiver combines the advantages of different archiving formats for the respective application and makes the handling of all kinds of archives simple for company employees. In addition to the main format RAR, WinRAR also supports other data formats, including 7Z, ACE, ARJ, JAR, TAR or ZIP.
Another important feature of RAR is its support of split archives in order to store large archives on several different storage media. Added to this is the enhanced security of the RAR archives created because WinRAR integrates recovery records which repair archives even on damaged data carriers. The generated RAR archives can also be protected from subsequent modification.
"Our goal is to establish RAR as the standard compression format on the global market and thereby to make state-of-the-art compression technology available to everyone", states Öncül Kaya, Managing Director of win.rar GmbH. "We are very pleased with the faith that the insurance company listed on EuroStocks has shown in us with their purchase of 10,000 licenses," says Öncül Kaya, Managing Director of win.rar GmbH. "Word of our customer's satisfaction has already spread in the insurance sector. This tells us: WinRAR meets the varied requirements that the sector demands from a compression tool."
In addition to quality, price counts.
Since WinRAR met all quality requirements, the price had to be right. Ultimately, over 10,000 systems had to be equipped. WinRAR scored with its straightforward licensing model: win.rar GmbH has no annual maintenance fees like the ones the competition demands, and they also provide additional licenses at a reduced rate. The insurance company was able to integrate the non-recurring payment as a fixed cost in their budget calculation. There are no follow-up costs.
The bottom line: WinRAR achieves a high compression rate while flexibly splitting up files and providing additional security for stored data. The RAR format is also optimized for large data quantities and data. In emergencies, even damaged RAR archives can be restored by retrieving the recovery records. In addition to quality, the attractive price model makes the case for WinRAR. Following the success of the deployment in Germany, the WinRAR solution is now also being used in other parts of the company; additional licenses are already on order.
WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of the RAR Archiver, the powerful archiver and archive manager. RAR files can usually compress content up to 30 percent more effectively than ZIP files. WinRAR's most important functions include extremely powerful document and multimedia file compression, processing of other archive formats, long filename support, programmable self-extracting archives (SFK), damaged archive repair, authenticity verification, embedded file comments, and archive encryption. The command line version of RAR is available for Linux, DOS, OS/2, FreeBSD and MAC OS X. Pocket RAR, the free WinRAR version for Pocket PCs, WinRAR for U3, and the new WinRAR Unplugged complete the WinRAR product range.
