Lake of the Torches Resort Casino is proud to announce its sponsorship of a local professional mixed martial artist who is making an undeniable mark in the Wisconsin MMA fight scene and is currently ranked number one in at 205lbs in the state. The Northern Wisconsin resort-casino signed on as a major sponsor for “Smile’N” Sam Alvey.
“Sam shows great potential and promise as a fighter who will become a formidable national contender,” said Michael J. Broderick, Director of Marketing at Lake of the Torches Resort Casino. “I’ve personally seen the grit and determination Sam has when he fought at King of the Cage events hosted by our casino. This guy’s amazing in the way he does not back down and does not give up until his opponent is out, and he does it all with a cheesy grin on his face! Sam is a very exciting MMA fighter and we expect great things from him in 2009 as his career progresses, and we are thrilled to have Sam as part of the Lake of the Torches family.”
Alvey has proved himself as a championship-level fighter in the ring in a relatively short period of time. His first experience in a cage fight, in November 2007, ended in the second round when he was TKO’d. However, he used that experience to motivate and train himself to win a 2008 King of the Cage Amateur Heavyweight Tournament Championship at Lake of the Torches Resort Casino. What was even more remarkable was the fact that he stepped into the tournament with only three days notice and being 60 pounds lighter than anyone else in the tournament. That championship led to a professional contract with King of the Cage.
He started on his path to mixed martial arts during his Junior and Senior years in high school with his father, a former wrestler, as inspiration. He continued his interest in the sport at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis., where he met up with his current instructor, Mr. Paul Metz of Metz Martial Arts Academy. This experience allowed Alvey to participate in martial arts tournaments and to study Pankration, an ancient form of the martial arts combining several different styles of fighting.
Alvey currently has a MMA professional fight record of 4 – 0 and a amateur record of 6-1. His other accomplishments inside the ring include a Silver Medal in the 2008 Pankration world championships and a Bronze medal in the AAU Judo nationals. He also is the current Racine Fight Night MMA Light Heavyweight Champion.
