We are keen to partner with the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus
Newport Beach, CA (Vocus) April 7, 2009
The North of England Inward Investment Agency today announced that the UK’s Daresbury Science & Innovation Campus (Daresbury SIC) formed a new partnership with leaders from Silicon Valley’s Plug and Play Tech Center during a meeting earlier last month. The meeting launched collaboration between the centers that will expand the resources of and growth potential for U.S. and UK high-tech companies. Daresbury SIC already hosts several major U.S. companies, including BioEden, Silicon Graphics (SGI) and IBM along with many others involved in the Daresbury SIC network.
Daresbury SIC is a world-class facility that houses research and development as well as high-tech businesses to support the work of scientists and engineers around the world. The campus is home to Daresbury Laboratory, Daresbury Innovation Centre, the Cockcroft Institute and over 80 high-tech companies in the advanced engineering, biomedical, energy and digital industries. As campus residents, small-to-medium sized companies are immersed in a culture of collaboration and given access to leading-edge scientific facilities and diverse expertise on-site.
Plug and Play Tech Center is the biggest technology center in Silicon Valley, providing an exceptional collaborative environment for over 200 technology start-up companies in the areas of Web 2.0, software, systems, semiconductors and telecom. Its start-up companies have raised more than $700 million in venture funding, and as a result have generated a cumulative value of $2 billion. Plug and Play’s network includes 30 top VC firms in the Valley, 20 top corporations, 20 top U.S. universities and 10 top tier service providers.
Global collaboration in the technology and science industries is essential for businesses to sustain growth, especially in an economic downturn. Knowledge sharing as it is done within Daresbury SIC and Plug and Play is an efficient and cost-effective way to advance technology. Partnership between these two centers can pave the way for new commercial opportunities to benefit U.S. high-tech companies, and new technological developments to benefit companies and consumers across the world.
“We are keen to partner with the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus,” says Maud Pasturad, Plug and Play Tech Center’s Business Development Manager. Pasturad met with 11 companies from the Daresbury Campus and its wider network. “Working together, we can leverage scientific, business and investment networks in our respective regions on behalf of all our enterprises.”
John Leake, General Manager of Daresbury SIC, added: “Core to our mission as a Campus is to develop strategic international relationships, enabling effective knowledge exchange and enhancing our awareness of global market opportunities. The partnership with Plug and Play offers exciting new opportunities for a number of our companies, which, by the nature of their products and services, will find the U.S. a very attractive market.”
North of England Inward Investment Agency’s Bay Area Vice President, Gareth Lewis views the partnership with Daresbury SIC as an opportunity to foster innovation and growth within the high-tech industry. “Plug and Play Tech Center’s visit reaffirms the UK’s attractive high-tech market and Daresbury’s reputation for providing world-class facilities and resources,” he says. “Convergence between the two institutions opens the door for new, important discoveries.”
