With job losses rising, some creatives are applying their skills to sell digital goods online. Today on FlashDen.net a marketplace for Adobe Flash files, one designer broke the $250,000 mark in sales. The achievement puts DigitalScience - as he is known on the site - at the top of a growing list of authors turning a healthy profit selling their creative wares online.
Envato, the company behind FlashDen.net operates a set of five interlinked marketplaces allowing creatives to sell everything from music loops to illustrations. There are 2023 sellers with at least one item sold, some of whom, like DigitalScience, are earning enough to quit their jobs altogether.
"When I first became an author on FlashDen I thought it was a great concept to sell Flash Components and make some extra money. Now after 2 years of FlashDen authoring it has become a substantial source of income which has given me the opportunity to go out on my own and start my own company." said Pierre a.k.a. DigitalScience, "It has been a truly awesome journey being a member of this site and it has literally changed my life."
For many authors, the sites provide a way to earn a little extra spending cash, pay off a loan or stabilize their freelance income.
"What is so exciting about our marketplaces is that they enable anyone with the talent to very quickly start selling digital goods." said Collis Ta'eed, CEO and founder of Envato, "The result is thousands of people suddenly getting access to a new income stream, something that is invaluable in this economic climate."
From each sale on the marketplaces authors take home between 40 and 70% depending on their previous sales volume. In return the sites promote, support and provide the sales mechanism for the transactions. Membership for the five sites is growing rapidly and last week topped 150,000 users.
For DigitalScience, the focus now lies on achieving the next big milestone, the first user with seven digit sales figures.
