The signature-based solutions offered by legacy AV vendors such as McAfee and Symantec are not capable of stopping most zero-day attacks
Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) April 10, 2009
Blue Ridge Networks today confirmed that PowerPoint users with Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard™ installed on their PCs are unaffected by the recently reported Microsoft PowerPoint zero-day attacks. Users without protection from zero-day threats have been warned not to open PowerPoint email attachments from anyone without first following detailed precautions prescribed by Microsoft. The infected files contain a virus that allows hackers to remotely execute implanted code giving them the ability to take control of a PC.
The attack has been seen in the wild and Microsoft characterizes the breadth of the attack as "limited and targeted". In many cases this means hackers are focusing on businesses and business users are particularly vulnerable because they are heavy users of PowerPoint and could easily expose corporate data and resources. These attacks are considered zero-day because the malware signature contained in these tainted PowerPoint documents can be altered by attackers in seconds to elude anti-virus/spyware software.
"The signature-based solutions offered by legacy AV vendors such as McAfee and Symantec are not capable of stopping most zero-day attacks," stated Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. "As attacks become more and more sophisticated, companies need to add layers of security to improve PC protection. Installing AppGuard will enhance PC security and increase effectiveness to address more than 90% of known and unknown malware vulnerabilities."
AppGuard is designed to neutralize malware attacks against the applications most targeted by hackers, including Web browsers, Microsoft Office Applications, and Media Players. Additional applications are easily added to the guarded list by either System Administrators or end-users.
Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard is priced at $24.95 per user. A free, 30-day trial is also available.
