On April 12, 1963, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested for breaking an Alabama injunction against demonstrations in Birmingham. While in solitary confinement, he read a letter from Alabama clergymen that had been published in the New York Times. The letter criticized Dr. King for provoking civil disturbances. "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" is Dr. King's response to the criticism.
