But then, reality starts to bite. It's hard work to get the campsite set up -- and the family is exhausted when the job is finally done. The ground is cold and hard and the sleeping bag is lumpy, nothing at all like the warm, cozy bed back home. The bathroom -- the outhouse, really -- just doesn't have all the comforts of home.
And then, there are the bugs and the biting insects and the scrapes and the scratches. The old swimming hole has seen better days. The sun is just a bit too bright in the warmth of the afternoon -- and so is the colour of your pink sunburned skin.
Remember those good, old days? Valerie Robinson Baker certainly does -- and she's made the joys of the annual family camping trip the subject of her new, illustrated children's book, aptly entitled Camping Is Fun . . . Isn't It? The book is an extension of her Welcome to Norman's World series of stories and drawings and it captures perfectly all the fun and all the fuss of a summer family vacation in the great outdoors.
This lovingly crafted book captures perfectly the sense of a family camping trip as seen through the eyes of a child. Robinson Baker wrote the text and illustrated the story and her eye for detail shines clearly, as does her ability to find family-based humour in everyday life and everyday happenings. Valerie's son Chris served as colourist and design consultant on the Camping Is Fun project.
If you've got youngsters -- and especially if you are planning a vacation in the great outdoors this summer -- you'll want your kids to turn the pages of Camping Is Fun . . Isn't It? It's a wonderful way to get the children excited -- and a great way for you and your youngsters to share a few smiles and chuckles as you await the wonders of some family time in a tent.
How you deal with the outhouse issue is another subject altogether!!
