Human Rights Activist Kavita Ramdas To Receive Distinguished Service Award from California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS)

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) will present its 2009 Haridas and Bina Chaudhuri Award for Distinguished Service to human rights activist Kavita N. Ramdas. CIIS will recognize Ms. Ramdas at a gala dinner on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto, California.

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) will present its 2009 Haridas and Bina Chaudhuri Award for Distinguished Service to human rights activist Kavita N. Ramdas. CIIS will recognize Ms. Ramdas at a gala dinner on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto, California.

"We're delighted to honor Kavita Ramdas for her dynamic leadership in promoting women's empowerment and health worldwide," said CIIS President Joseph L. Subbiondo.

Ms. Ramdas will receive the award at CIIS's seventh annual dinner celebrating the Institute's Haridas and Bina Chaudhuri Endowment for South Asian Philosophy and Culture, which supports courses and public programs on Indian philosophy, culture, and history.

Ms. Ramdas is the president and CEO of the Global Fund for Women, the largest grant-making organization in the world that focuses on women's rights internationally. During Kavita Ramdas's tenure as head of the Global Fund for Women, the Fund has tripled both the total amount of its grants and the number of countries that it serves. The Global Fund supports local groups all over the world that promote the well-being and political involvement of women.

Born in Mumbai, India, Kavita Ramdas earned a BA from Mount Holyoke College and a master's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Her writings on international politics have appeared in Foreign Policy, Current History, and The Nation.

"Kavita Ramdas is an amazing person who inspires others to hope for a better world -- and to work to make it a reality," said Subbiondo.
