Dr. Powell's experience in the field of behavioral health and substance abuse counseling is matched only by his enthusiasm and effectiveness as a trainer
Horse Shoe, N.C. (PRWEB) April 18, 2009
This summer, Four Circles Recovery Center substance abuse treatment program for young adults is co-hosting its second annual professional development workshop at its base camp in the beautiful mountains of Asheville, North Carolina.
On Friday, June 5, 2009, workshop attendees will be treated to a full-day presentation on the topic "Integrating Spirituality into Therapy," with world-renowned guest speaker Dr. David J. Powell, President of the International Center for Health Concerns.
Co-editor of the Journal of Chemical Dependency Treatment, Dr. Powell is an internationally recognized trainer, presenter, and author who holds a doctoral degree in human relations and psychology as well as four master's degrees (including three in divinity from Yale, Princeton, and Hartford Seminaries). He is also a licensed alcohol and drug abuse counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist, and has been a diplomat in the International Academy of Behavioral Medicine.
"Dr. Powell's experience in the field of behavioral health and substance abuse counseling is matched only by his enthusiasm and effectiveness as a trainer," said Jack Kline, MS, LPC, LCAS, NCC, Executive Director at Four Circles. "We are fortunate to have him as our presenter, and look forward to sharing what promises to be an educational and spiritually enlightening discussion with other professionals in the field."
In addition to earning CEUs for this workshop, guests will enjoy networking opportunities with other professionals and tour the Four Circles base camp. Set on a sprawling campus with modern lodging, an impressive high and low ropes course, a sweat lodge, and other amenities, Four Circles harnesses the transformational power of nature to bring about change in the lives of young adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
Because addiction is a disease that impacts every area of a person's life, one of the goals of treatment at Four Circles is to help clients achieve recovery and find a healthy balance in mind, body, and spirit. Spirituality is a fundamental component of the Four Circles holistic substance abuse treatment program, represented as one of the "four circles" of recovery, along with the mental, physical, and emotional aspects of treatment.
"Finding meaning through spirituality is an essential concept in addiction recovery, and one that is firmly grounded in the AA/NA 12-Step philosophy," said Kline. "Research shows people who engage in spiritual practices have higher success rates in recovery. Spirituality is one powerful way to bring hope to those who have lost all hope to drug or alcohol abuse."
Although Four Circles does not endorse any particular religion or belief system, the staff of addiction experts helps each individual connect with their own belief system, whatever it may be, in a natural setting that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. Wilderness therapy presents a rare opportunity for young people to immerse themselves in a peaceful, serene setting and find time for spiritual practice.
In addition to wilderness therapy, clients at Four Circles participate in meditation, journaling, spirituality groups with other individuals in recovery, and spiritually enhancing rites of passage such as a sweat lodge and four-day solo "vision quests" in the field.
The June 5th workshop is a natural complement to Four Circles' holistic approach to substance abuse treatment. Since 2006, Four Circles has developed outreach programming for professionals in the field of substance abuse treatment, and continues working to provide continuing education opportunities that are of value to professionals in the community.
