ASA Accepting Registrations for Statistics Workshop in Washington DC for U.S. K-12 Math and Science Teachers

The American Statistical Association (ASA) is now accepting registrations for its annual Meeting within a Meeting (MWM) statistics workshop for K-12 math and science teachers across the U.S. MWM will be held Monday, August 3, and Tuesday, August 4, in conjunction with the 2009 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Washington, DC. The Washington Statistical Society will reimburse the registration fee for the first 25 DC metro-area teachers who register and attend MWM

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) April 17, 2009 -- The American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation's preeminent professional statistical society, is now accepting registrations for its annual Meeting within a Meeting (MWM) statistics workshop for K-12 math and science teachers across the U.S. MWM will be held Monday, August 3, and Tuesday, August 4, in conjunction with the 2009 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) in Washington, DC.

This third annual MWM is designed to enhance the understanding and teaching of statistics in the math/science curriculum. The program was developed by the ASA and premiered in 2007 to help teachers, many of whom have little or no formal statistics training, meet current math requirements for statistics education.

"MWM helps us carry out one of ASA's primary missions -- the improvement of statistical education at all levels," said Martha Aliaga, ASA Director of Education. "In addition to helping teachers with statistics in the classroom, MWM provides participants with a network of statisticians and educators to assist them in developing the quantitative literacy of their students."

During the conference, teachers will explore problems that require them to formulate questions, collect, organize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data and apply basic concepts of probability. MWM will examine what students can be expected to do at the most basic level of understanding and what can be expected of them as their skills develop and their experience broadens. Content is consistent with GAISE recommendations and NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.

MWM's Monday activities will be held at the Center City Public Charter School - Shaw Campus, 711 N Street NW, Washington, DC. Tuesday's activities will take place at the U.S. Census Bureau and the Washington Convention Center.

Teachers can obtain program information or register to attend the conference online at http://www.amstat.org/education/mwm/index.cfm. Registration for MWM will continue through July 15 or until the course is filled. Course attendees do not have to register for the Joint Statistical Meetings to participate in this workshop.

The Washington Statistical Society, the largest ASA chapter, has offered to reimburse the $30 registration fee for the first 25 DC metro-area teachers who register and attend MWM. Teachers eligible for reimbursement are K-12 teachers in the Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the District of Columbia and neighboring parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
