Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2009
With Earth Day, April 22nd, just around the corner, a proprietary survey released today by PayCycle, America's #1 online payroll service, found that even with the economy continuing to dominate headlines, most small business owners (63%) say environmental issues are just as important. And over a third (35%) found themselves worrying more about the environment this past year than ever before.
According to the survey, 84% of small business owners consider themselves at least "occasional environmentalists". In this group, 34% consider themselves "environmentalists", taking many steps to reduce their impact on the environment. Of the rest, 11% are "armchair" environmentalists (they read about it but don't really participate) and only a fraction, 5%, are not at all concerned about the environment.
When it comes to selecting business services, 25% said that a primary reason they chose PayCycle® Online Payroll was because it is a paperless payroll solution, while another 56% said being paperless was somewhat important in their decision. And 3 out of 4 small business owners found a green vendor to be more appealing than a non-green vendor if the service and price are the same.
Important to be "Green"; Online Services Being Selected to Reduce Paper Usage
The survey found that a large majority (88%) of small business owners feel it is important for their businesses to be green. Thirty-two percent said it is "very important", while only 12% said it is not important at all.
"The numbers tell us that most small business owners are concerned about the environment. Even though the economy impacts their wallets, they know the planet is just as important in the long term and they are willing to do what they can to make a difference," said Jim Heeger, president and CEO of PayCycle.
The survey found that 80% of small business owners are using more online business services, such as PayCycle, as a way to reduce their paper usage. "When it comes to running their businesses, small business owners are looking for practical ways to be green. Their aim is to balance being green with finding the best solution at the best price," continued Heeger.
"I have a small business and being green is important to me, but I have to be aware of the costs. I have to make sure I can meet my payroll before I worry about how green my company is," said Vicki Dalva of Dalva Law.
Small Business Owners Celebrate Earth Day
Small business owners will be doing their part to celebrate Earth Day. Many are limiting energy consumption, carpooling, cleaning up local parks and beaches, and assisting in local educational efforts. Others will be recognizing the environment as they do every day, while conducting business as usual. "I'm not doing anything special that day. Every day should be a day to be conscious of the environment, but I don't need a holiday to celebrate it," said Kirsten Skow, a franchise operator.
The survey, conducted between April 3 and April 10, 2009, compiled responses from 202 small businesses randomly selected from PayCycle's broad, national base of over 85,000 small business customers.
