GeoPense, a volunteer computing effort, was launched earlier this year. This team is world-wide, but mainly based in Europe and Canada. The purpose of this effort is to bring together widely distributed computing power to be applied to several tasks in the realm of scientific research.
The first of these tasks to be taken on is Folding@home (http://folding.stanford.edu). This project simulates protein folding on a computer. Understanding protein folding is part of the research into many serious diseases, including cancer. It takes an average PC decades to simulate one fold, so pooling the power of thousands of computers speeds up the process dramatically.
GeoPense endeavours to gather computing resources from government, health care, education, museums, industry and individuals for this purpose. Assistance is given freely to those participating. When set up properly, this computing power uses only dormant computer time, resulting in no adverse effect on the day-to-day operations of an institution. On-site assistance, mentoring, and presentations are all available upon request. In addition, active displays of project status can be set up, providing excellent public viewing of an institution's participation.
